Essential Oils & Animals ~ Sensitivity to Oils

It is important to recognize that an animal's sense of smell is incredibly more sensitive than a human's. This is why it is extremely important to properly introduce your animals to essential oils. One of the most common concerns is that an animal does not like oils. What has usually happened in this circumstance is that there has been an overly aggressive introduction to the oils. Should you encounter any type of situation where the skin, paws or animal becomes irritated from an essential oil application, it is then advised that you use a diluting oil, or what we call a carrier oil (V-6, fractionated coconut oil, or avocado oil to name a few), to the area where the oil has been applied.

Never attempt to use water or wash off offending essential oils with water-based soaps or shampoos as this can exacerbate the irritation. Whenever in doubt, err on the side of caution and dilute your essential oils, especially for cats and small animals. Of course, should you require further assistance, I am always here to answer any questions you may have or offer you guidance.

Flea Treatment for Your Pets Using Essential Oils

I have been fielding many questions about fleas, ticks, and other parasites since it is that time of year in many areas.  Fleas are one of the most difficult parasites to eliminate, so if you already have an infestation, there may be a few steps you need to take.  Also, every animal in the home must be treated for fleas . . . . not just one or two.

Before we get started, I will reiterate that I ONLY recommend Young Living products, as they are 100% pure therapeutic-grade essential oils and products that are genuine, free of synthetic chemicals, and of unmatched purity . . . . guaranteed from Seed to Seal®.  Young Living is the only company that can make that promise.

If you are already a YL member and are working from the Premium Starter Kit, there are a couple of ways you can begin holistic treatment.  If you are not yet a YL member, I recommend you begin by becoming a Wholesale Member by purchasing a Premium Starter Kit (see below for further details on how to get started!).  I also recommend additional products which are not included in the Premium Starter Kit, however, they are products that are quite effective and can be used for your animals, as well as yourself, thereby making them a great investment in everyone's health!

Dogs:

Bathing ~ Thieves Household Cleaner, Thieves, Purification ~ If you wish to give your dog a bath, begin by adding a drop or two of Thieves and / or Purification to the bathing mixture. Always allow your pet the option of smelling the oils first, then let them decide which one they are comfortable with.  You will be able to tell by their reaction and body language.  Never force oils or treatments on any animal, as this will only cause them additional stress, which we do not want.

Petting ~ Purification ~ If you want to treat for fleas right away, put 2-3 drops of Purification in the palm of your hand, then rub your hands together and use the "petting" method, where you start at the neck area, taking care to avoid the eyes, nose, and mouth.  Simply "pet" or rub into their fur like you are giving a light massage, and work your way down and around their body, making sure to get underneath to their belly and down their legs, feet, and tail! Again, start with less oil and just do a light massage to hit all areas. You can reapply again as needed, however, be sure that your pet accepts the oil(s) and give them the opportunity to leave if the oils make them uncomfortable.

Diffusion ~ Black Pepper ~ Flea Bomb Recipe ~ Although not commonly used in animals, it is used for the Flea Bomb Recipe, which is a super powerful treatment and should only be used for bad infestations.  It is best to evacuate the premises when using this method, including all animals, fish tanks, humans, etc.  This method requires an air diffuser, therefore I will not go into the entire process here, however, I would be happy to privately consult on this method.  Please feel free to contact me directly for further information.

Supplements ~ Longevity, NingXia Red, Sulfurzyme, Omega Blue, and MultiGreens. Healthier pets are far less attractive to fleas and other parasites, therefore supplementation is highly recommended.

Raindrop Technique® ~ This method combines the art of aromatherapy with the techniques of Vita Flex and massage in the application of essential oils to various areas of the body. This collection provides a revolutionary means of bringing balance and harmony to the body ~ physically, mentally, and emotionally.  Used in severe situations up to once per day.  Fleas dislike many of the Raindrop Technique oils, and this technique also strengthens the immune system, which makes dogs (and other animals) less attractive to flea infestation.  Modifications can be made by adding in other insect repelling oils.  The Raindrop collection also includes an instructional DVD and mini brochure that teach you how to perform the Raindrop Technique®.

Cleaning ~ Cleaning, laundering, and spraying with Thieves Household Cleaner indoors and out is highly recommended.  Be sure to include bedding, blankets, furniture and other areas your pet frequents.  You can also add a few drops of Thieves or Purification to the laundry for an extra boost.

Cats:

Topical ~ Bathe with Thieves Household Cleaner (can add a drop or two of Purification as well).

Kitty Raindrop Technique® ~ Modified with Palo Santo and Purification, apply up to once per day. Fleas particularly dislike the KRT solution, and it is helpful to apply this solution where fleas tend to be the worst on your kitty . . . . generally the rear end area.  This method combines the art of aromatherapy with the techniques of Vita Flex and massage in the application of essential oils to various areas of the body. This collection provides a revolutionary means of bringing balance and harmony to the body ~ physically, mentally, and emotionally.  Used in severe situations up to once per day.  The Raindrop collection also includes an instructional DVD and mini brochure that teach you how to perform the Raindrop Technique®.

Petting ~ Purification or Kitty Raindrop Technique ~ If you want to treat for fleas right away, put a 2-3 drops of Purification in the palm of your hand, then rub your hands together and use the "petting" method, where you start at the neck area, taking care to avoid the eyes, nose, and mouth. My kitties do not particularly care for the smell of Purification and are more comfortable with other essential oils such as Palo Santo.

Supplements ~ NingXia Red, Sulfurzyme, Omega Blue, and MultiGreens.  Healthier pets are far less attractive to fleas and other parasites, therefore supplementation is highly recommended.

Birds / Ferrets / Exotics, Horses & Large Animals ~ Each animal is an individual and requires slightly different treatment, therefore should you have questions regarding these types of animals, please contact us directly for additional information.

With YLEOs, always start with less, or pre-diluted oils, especially on smaller pets, as you do not want to overdo it by applying too much oil.  A little goes a long way, and many oils work better when diluted. You can always reapply later if necessary.  To learn more about the best way to use a specific oil or supplement, please consult the Animal Desk Reference for animals, or the Essential Oils Pocket Reference or Desk Reference, if for yourself or other persons.

These recommendations are merely a starting point and are truly only a partial list of products that can be used to treat your animals.

Should you wish to get started with your own oils and products, I recommend that you enroll as a wholesale member in Young Living by purchasing the Premium Starter Kit, which gives you the Everyday Oils, a bonus oil called Stress Away, a Home Diffuser, as well as samples to try or share. This is an excellent investment in your health, as well as the health of your animals.

You also have the option of joining as a Retail Member, as opposed to a Wholesale Member, so it is completely up to you. There are also options for monthly Essential Rewards orders, which earn you points that you can spend on additional products, as well as promotional items every month that you can earn for free, just by shopping for what you already need.

Animals & Essential Oils 101

For most pet parents, our animals are like our children and depend on us for everything . . . . food and water, grooming, shelter, and healthcare. That is why there is nothing worse than seeing them under the weather or in pain. Just as with any stressful situation, it is important not to panic and to stay as calm as possible. Animals sense our emotions, often through smell, therefore the best way to keep them calm is to make sure you are calm.

One of the biggest challenges a pet parent or animal caregiver can face in a moment of crisis or stress is trying to communicate with their animal. It is far easier to read an animal when that animal trusts you. You know your animal(s) better than anyone, therefore using common sense and your natural instincts can be very helpful.

When used properly and when keeping key facts in mind, essential oils are very effective in providing our animals with natural / holistic care that works!  I personally keep several essential oils on hand that are perfect for animal first aid. Knowing what you have on hand, which oils are most effective for any given situation, and what amount and frequency is appropriate for each animal in your care is crucial.

* I will preface this next section by stating that the ONLY essential oils I use and recommend are Young Living Essential Oils, as they are 100% pure, therapeutic-grade and have been proven to be safe and effective time and time again. As a holistic consultant, energy healer, animal Reiki practitioner and lifelong pet parent, I only trust Young Living for my clients and my own animals, as well as for myself!

Guidelines For Proper Usage:

~ The key to using essential oils with animals is to always go very slowly! Do not rush and do not force them on your animals. Most animals will respond much better to essential oils if they are comfortable with you and with the various scents of essential oils. Also, introducing them slowly will avoid creating any negative experiences or promoting any adverse reactions to the oils. Animals are highly sensitive to odors and may find a new smell too intense in the beginning.

~ An aversion to essential oils may be a simple dislike to the oil (or oils). This usually occurs when an oil has been aggressively introduced or improperly used. For example, an animal's face, nose or feet are highly sensitive areas, therefore any new smells must be introduced slowly and carefully. Aversions can arise very quickly and may take a long time to overcome, so the more time and patience you use introducing the oils, the better.

~ Start with very small amounts of whichever oil is needed for the situation you are addressing. Keep in mind that when using 100% pure, therapeutic-grade essential oils from Young Living, one drop is usually plenty when you are just beginning. Until you are able to read your animals and see their reactions, make sure they are comfortable and do not exceed recommended amounts

~ Avoid using hot or irritating oils on your pets. If you are in doubt about comfortably using a particular oil on your animal(s), it is always best to err on the side of caution and find a suitable alternative using common sense and good judgment.

Essential Oils & Animals ~ Infections and the Immune System

Our family pets are exposed to the same infectious agents we are, so the health of their immune system is important. Their immune system must be able to resist the onslaught of exposure to resistant bacteria and viruses in the environment. Since many animals are closer to the ground than people, they are often exposed to many more parasites and fungal elements. Being able to fight disease is needed to prevent illness and stop the passing of harmful agents to the animal's owners. When infectious agents are present in the body, the agents take over and cause overwhelming life-threatening illness. The body is stressed, increased weakness develops to further infection, and the end result can be high morbidity or mortality. We also now know the world is full of infectious agents that are no longer sensitive to many conventional antibiotics. The indiscriminate use of antibiotics has lead to a problem of an inability to treat people and pets.

Essential oils are nature's answer to this problem. Research has shown that essential oils kill infectious agents better than conventional therapy. This includes bacteria, viruses, fungus, and parasites both internal and external. Although popular years ago before the advent of antibiotics and other seemingly convenient treatments, the uses of essential oils for infections of various types have all but been forgotten. But recently the essential oils are being revisited with positive results.

The family pet can use the essential oils much the same way as humans do. One of the first ways the oils benefit the pet is by building the immune system. Often animals are missing key elements to maintain health, with the immune system lacking strength and resistance. In short, the pet is not healthy. Supplements with essential oils are an easy option to help boost immunity and provide a strong resistance. Although a lot of the supplements are made for people as far as dosage, some simple modifications of the amounts make it possible for the same products to be used for the whole family, including the pets. This makes using supplements convenient and easy for the pet owner.

Young Living Supplements to Improve Your Pet's Immunity

* ImmuPro

* Inner Defense

For pets, the dose used is based on the animals size. Figuring the dosage is usually not difficult, even for the smallest pet. By using something like agave as a sweetener or NingXia Red (and administered with a measuring spoon or small child's dosing syringe), the proper amount can be attained. The supplement range is usually wide enough so small increases or decreases need not cause alarm. Dilution of the essential oils is both patient dependent and oil dependent. If an essential oil is diluted for the pet's owner, then the oil is diluted for the pet as well. Again, dilution is based on size and species of pet. The only dilution form used is pure carrier oil such as V-6, FCO (fractionated coconut oil), or another light oil like jojoba or almond oil. Never dilute with water as this will drive the oil into the animal's tissue and can cause irritation. Always dilute with a carrier oil!

By using Young Living Essential Oils, we have another avenue to effectively treat infection, sickness, and bolster the immune system, but use should be discriminate. The oil should be chosen due to its unique qualities for eliminating the infectious agent. Just as antibiotics are chosen for the agent's sensitivity to the particular kind of medication, so should the oil. Luckily the essential oil varieties are endless considering the abundance of plant life. New oils are discovered and the special properties they possess that deal with a variety of problems seem unrestricted.

The Benefits of Essential Oils for Animals ~ Frankincense

Frankincense of the carteri variety is often referred to as “regular Frankincense” as opposed to Sacred Frankincense.  Frankincense is likely one of the most important and well used oils in the animal world.  It has been used with every species, in almost every way imaginable. It is incredibly safe, well tolerated, versatile and effective.  Major conditions in which Frankincense is used include all forms of cancer, tumors, cysts, behavioral conditions, depression, brain disorders, seizures, immune system stimulation and regulation, autoimmune disorders, DNA repair, and more. Frankincense is considered a "life force" oil and has been used extensively in critical cases in many holistic veterinary hospitals. The use of Frankincense in times of transition and death is incredibly helpful to the animal, as well as to the animal's guardian.

Frankincense also appears to magnify and enhance the effects of other essential oils when they are used concurrently.  Frankincense is also found in many essential oil blends and products, which can be utilized in animals.

Frankincense has been used many, many ways in all animals:  butterflies have dipped their feet in it, honey bees have had cotton-ball diffusers placed in their bee hives, birds have been misted with water-based solutions, fish have had it added to their aquariums, it has been ingested in large amounts in many species, rabbits and guinea pigs have been pet with it, and it has been diffused in a variety of ways.

Common ways to use Frankincense on all animals including Birds & Exotics, Cats, Dogs & Large Animals:  Adding one drop or more to 1 liter of drinking water, adding one drop, (or more) to 1 tablespoon of food, adding to a Species Specific Raindrop Technique, water misting with 4 drops(or more) added to 4 ounces of distilled water, via petting (neat or diluted) direct application (neat or diluted) indirect diffusion, and water diffusion.

Essential Oils Product Tips for Pets + DIY

In most households that I've come across, pets are significant members of the family. Therefore, our pets’ health and well-being is a priority. Just like humans, our furry & feathered friends need proper hygiene, a healthy diet, and extra care when becoming ill. The health-supporting benefits of Young Living’s Essential Oils can considerably contribute to your pets’ quality of life.

For our furry friends, the most effective and easiest way to keep your pet’s coat in tip-top condition is by using Animal Scents™ Shampoo. Imbued with the power of Citronella, Lavandin, Lemon, Geranium, and Spikenard essential oils, our pet shampoo gently cleanses, protects, and conditions without harmful ingredients.

For those situations when your pet is contending with fleas, we have included a do-it-yourself anti-flea spray recipe that will help you keep those pesky fleas far from your animal.

DIY Anti-Flea Spray

What You Need:

8-oz. glass spray bottle (we recommend a dark glass spray bottle, such as amber or blue)
1 drop of Cedarwood essential oil
1 drop of Thyme essential oil
½ cup of V-6 Vegetable Oil Complex (can also use a good quality vegetable or olive oil)

What You Do:

Add ingredients into a glass spray bottle. Shake to combine. Lightly spray on your pet when needed.

Tips for Massaging Your Pets with Essential Oils

To enhance your grooming regimen and deepen your relationship with your pet, why not add a relaxing massage to your routine?

Follow these steps for the massage:

* Invite your pet to lie down.
* Start by stroking the areas you already know your pet enjoys.
* As your pet relaxes, start using long strokes. This will relax him/her even more.
* Once your pet stretches out, you know he/she is ready for the massage.
* If you would like to use V-6, then put a couple of drops on your fingertips.
* Begin with the head and with circular motions, gently work your fingertips over the entire body.
* Use small, soft movements with cats and small dogs and larger movements with bigger animals.

The time invested is very insignificant to the pay off. With a cat or small dog, it will only take a couple of minutes. With larger breeds, it may take 10 minutes to finish the massage.

Once your pet is completely relaxed, it is a great time to brush or comb from head to tail. Just a few minutes a couple of times a week will not only keep your pet well-groomed and happy, but you will also recognize if any mood or physical changes need to be addressed with your vet.

When using Young Living products on your pets, remember size and physiology make them more sensitive to the effects of essential oils. Here is why:

* Most pets have a greater sense of smell
* Cats and small dogs have a low body weight
* Cats have thinner skin that allows essential oils to be easily and
quickly absorbed in their bloodstream
* Cats’ livers do not function like humans or dogs. Bottom-line: less is better for a cat.

As always, we advise care when administrating essential oils on your pets.  With proper use and common sense, you and your pets will experience the amazing benefits of adding essential oils to your lives by replacing the common harsh, toxic chemicals.

Should you wish to get started with your own oils and products, we recommend that you enroll as a wholesale member in Young Living by purchasing the Premium Starter Kit, which gives you the Everyday Oils, a bonus oil called Stress Away, a Home Diffuser, as well as samples to try or share.
