5 Tips to Help Your Dog Weather Winter

With frigid temperatures and heavy snowfall, the first few months of the year can be tough for your dog, making it easy for him to catch the winter blues. Here are five winter tips to show your dog a little extra love and keep him healthy and happy this season!

1. Play Dress Up with Your Pup:

Just because your dog has a built-in fur coat doesn’t mean he won’t get cold ~ his breed, size, and even his age affect his internal thermostat. If he doesn’t have a heavy fur coat, a sweater or dog coat can keep your pup cozy during the winter season. Pay attention to the material and the fit when choosing a coat or sweater for your furry friend’s comfort. It never hurts to have several on hand to ensure your dog has a dry sweater or coat whenever he heads outdoors.

2. Change Grooming Habits for Winter:

In the drying winter season, less is more. If possible, minimize baths during the colder months to help your dog maintain naturally occurring oils so his skin won’t dry out as much. When you do bathe him, pamper your pup by using Animal Scents™ Shampoo to clean and condition your pet’s coat. Make sure your dog is completely dry before going out after a bath.

3. Prevent Cabin Fever:

If you live somewhere cold, your dog may stay inside more during this time of year. After being cooped up all day, it’s easy for your furry friend to catch cabin fever. Combat the boredom by creating indoor activities and stocking up on plenty of toys. Playing with interactive toys ~ or any toys for that matter ~ can stimulate your pet’s brain. If you live near an indoor dog park or agility park, an hour a day could be a great physical outlet for him.

4. Help Your Pet Stay Hydrated:

Cold temperatures can cause dehydration, so help your pup stay hydrated by giving him plenty of fresh water and choosing high-quality food for good nutrition and health.

5. Provide a Warm, Clean Bed and Plenty of Blankets:

Who doesn’t like to snuggle up to fresh, warm blankets on a snowy day? Freshen up your dog’s bedding by laundering it regularly so he has a hygienic place to stay toasty warm.

Keep your pets happy and healthy year-round with 100% pure, therapeutic-grade essential oils and the Animal Scents collection of products formulated specifically for your pets!

Essential Oils ~ Alternative Therapies for Animals

Here's a great short video highlighting Thomas Pfafman DVM, CAC, who has been using alternative therapy to treat animals for decades. From fleas and ticks, to bumps and bruises, essential oils allow Dr. Tom to get to the source of the problem and heal long-term.

I use these oils on my pets, as well as on my Animal Reiki clients and in my holistic spiritual healing business.  I always recommend that pet parents learn the proper usage of essential oils prior to treating their own pets, so please ask for help when seeking out alternative therapies!

Why I ONLY Use Young Living Essential Oils . . . .

You might be wondering what the difference is between Young Living Essential Oils and the oils found in your local health food stores, or online. I want to be very clear that whenever I discuss using essential oils, or oil-infused products, I am ONLY talking about Young Living Essential Oils. Many of the oils available for purchase in stores or online contain chemicals, or include synthetic additives. You also never know where the plant material comes from with those oils. I never want someone to hear me say that Lavender can help with irritated skin, then go buy a low-quality bottle of Lavender at the store, put it on their skin and end up with their skin being even more irritated due to the chemicals and / or adulteration. This can happen (and has happened), and that is why I only use 100% pure, therapeutic-grade Young Living Essential Oils!

If an oil bottle label says “Topical or External Use Only” or “Do Not Ingest” then there’s your red flag that it’s probably adulterated. Expiration dates are also a red flag. Young Living oils are a different grade if essential oils, as they are therapeutic-grade, NOT perfume grade or synthetic.

Just like with food, when it comes to what we put in or on our bodies, we want to be certain that is is clean, pure and of the best quality and we feel the same way about essential oils.

1. Young Living Essential Oils are 100% pure therapeutic-grade essential oils ~ which means they can be used for therapeutic use, not just for fragrance. Oils bought in the store or online are “perfume grade” or "floral waters" and can only be used for pretty smells, however be aware that they are adulterated. I did the research, which is why I only use Young Living Essential Oils for my own health and wellness, as well as for that of my pets. Young Living Essential Oils can also replace many of the toxic products you use in your home, such as personal care products, beauty products, air fresheners and household cleaners.

2. Young Living carefully monitors every step of the production of their oils from Seed to Seal ~ from the time the first seed is planted to the time the bottle is sealed.

3. Young Living is the ONLY Essential Oil company that owns their own organic farms to grow the plants that are used to make the oils.

4. Young Living has been in business for over 20 years. It uses its own internal labs, in addition to third-party audits, to verify that international purity and potency standards are met and surpassed. Young Living completes 8 different tests on EVERY BATCH OF OIL that is made!

5. Young Living oils are distilled at low temperature and pressure in stainless steel chambers to maintain the delicate therapeutic compounds of the essential oils. The key to producing therapeutic-grade essential oils is to preserve as many of the delicate therapeutic compounds within the EO as possible. These fragile constituents are easily destroyed by high temperature and pressure, as well as any contact with chemically reactive metals such as copper or aluminum. YL oils are steam-distilled in stainless steel chambers at low pressure and low temperature. YL only uses plant material free of agrichemicals and steam distillation to end up with a pure oil. Cheap adulterated oils will have leftover chemical solvents from distillations in them. Many store-bought oil companies use plant materials with pesticides (and the residue often ends up in the essential oil), they may distill their oils with chemical solvents like hexane, or use chemically reactive metals like aluminum in the distillation chambers which can also affect the oils.

Should you wish to get started with your own oils and products, we recommend that you enroll as a wholesale member in Young Living by purchasing the Premium Starter Kit, which gives you the Everyday Oils, a bonus oil called Citrus Fresh, a Home Diffuser, as well as NingXia Red and EO samples to try or share. How to Use Essential Oils For Cats Safely

The use of essential oils for cats is probably the most controversial area in the world of aromatherapy. There are people who are adamant that essential oils cannot be used safely for cats, however I personally use essential oils on my pets, including my cats, who happen to gravitate toward most of the oils . . . . whether in the diffuser or to me, since I use many of the oils topically. There are a few oils that they are not fond of, however, they are always given the option to leave the room and not be near the oils they do not care for, however there are not many that I can think of.

Cats are unique. One might even wonder if they come from another planet! Because they are different, their liver enzymes do not metabolize things the same way as a dog or a human. Oils high in eugenol or phenol compounds can stress their liver. This is highly problematic and can even be fatal with the use of poor quality, non-therapeutic grade (medical grade) oils. When a pure, medical-grade essential oil is collected in its entirety, the trace amounts of chemicals, which would normally be missed by the fragrance industry, act as a buffering agent to the rest of the compounds. Basically, if you do not collect the entire oil structure from a plant, you change its chemical makeup, thus decreasing the medical benefits and missing out on some very important properties.

Oils that are high in eugenols and phenols are often referred to as "hot" oils. These are oils that would likely cause irritation if they came in contact with your face, or other sensitive areas of your body. Common oils to use caution with are Basil, Cinnamon Bark, Clove, Eucalyptus, Lemongrass, Mountain Savory, Oregano, Black Pepper, Peppermint, Thyme, and Wintergreen.

Also, oil blends containing "hot" oils should be used with caution . . . . not that we cannot use these oils . . . . we just need to be cognizant of possible reactions such as redness, heat, irritation, as well as discomfort or smell aversions. The best rule of thumb is to dilute, dilute, dilute!

Another important aspect of using essential oils for cats (and other animals) is to support their systems nutritionally. Giving NingXia Red to animals while they are on oils can supply antioxidants and nutrients vital to liver function. NingXia Red can help any health condition by supporting the body.
This is an excellent investment in your health, as well as the health of your animals.

The Benefits of Essential Oils for Animals ~ Purification

Purification Essential Oil blend is excellent at eliminating odors;  from skunk smell to doggy odor. Purification can be added to Animal Scents Shampoo or Thieves Household Cleaner for an extra therapeutic and de-skunking bath.  Purification diffusion is critical in animal environments for the control of odors, reduction of transmission of disease, and boosting the immune system.  Purification is the "go-to" oil for external parasites as well, and has been used in all species of animals for this purpose.  Purification is excellent for kennel cough, fungal respiratory infections, ear mites, ear infections, lacerations, abscesses, wounds, insect bites, insect repellant, external parasites, and upper respiratory infections.

Birds & Exotics:  Purification has been used in many ways for these animals. Addition into Species Specific Raindrop Technique, water mister (4 drops in 4 ounces of distilled water), direct topical application (neat and diluted), addition to soaking water (1 drop per liter), water diffusion (including caging and tenting), addition into Animal Scents Ointment or Shampoo (1 drop per tablespoon), and via Petting (diluted or neat).  Oral use is not generally used in these species.

Cats:  The most cat-friendly ways to use Purification is by addition into Kitty Raindrop Technique, water diffusion (including caging and tenting), Petting (neat or diluted), water misting (when tolerated), direct topical application (diluted or neat ~ especially for ear mites and abscesses), and Litteroma.  For Ear Mites, 1 drop of Purification is places onto a cotton swab and swabbed inside the infected ear. Care must be taken not to have oil drip directly into the ear canal.  Please consult the ADR for more explanation into these conditions.  Oral use in cats is generally limited to ingestion by grooming.

Dogs & Larger Animals:  These animals can use Purification in all of the external methods as described in Physical Use of Essential Oil Blends, which is as follows:

The blends can largely be used much more extensively in these species.  If a blend is indicated for oral use in humans, then it can generally be consumed for these species quite easily.  All of the methods of application can usually be used, including insertion into Raindrop Technique, water and air diffusion, Petting (neat or diluted), direct topical application (diluted or neat), addition into various carriers (Animal Scents Ointment, V-6, Massage Oils), or added to pools and soaking water. Purification is not commonly used by ingestion.

The Benefits of Essential Oils for Animals ~ Frankincense

Frankincense of the carteri variety is often referred to as “regular Frankincense” as opposed to Sacred Frankincense.  Frankincense is likely one of the most important and well used oils in the animal world.  It has been used with every species, in almost every way imaginable. It is incredibly safe, well tolerated, versatile and effective.  Major conditions in which Frankincense is used include all forms of cancer, tumors, cysts, behavioral conditions, depression, brain disorders, seizures, immune system stimulation and regulation, autoimmune disorders, DNA repair, and more. Frankincense is considered a "life force" oil and has been used extensively in critical cases in many holistic veterinary hospitals. The use of Frankincense in times of transition and death is incredibly helpful to the animal, as well as to the animal's guardian.

Frankincense also appears to magnify and enhance the effects of other essential oils when they are used concurrently.  Frankincense is also found in many essential oil blends and products, which can be utilized in animals.

Frankincense has been used many, many ways in all animals:  butterflies have dipped their feet in it, honey bees have had cotton-ball diffusers placed in their bee hives, birds have been misted with water-based solutions, fish have had it added to their aquariums, it has been ingested in large amounts in many species, rabbits and guinea pigs have been pet with it, and it has been diffused in a variety of ways.

Common ways to use Frankincense on all animals including Birds & Exotics, Cats, Dogs & Large Animals:  Adding one drop or more to 1 liter of drinking water, adding one drop, (or more) to 1 tablespoon of food, adding to a Species Specific Raindrop Technique, water misting with 4 drops(or more) added to 4 ounces of distilled water, via petting (neat or diluted) direct application (neat or diluted) indirect diffusion, and water diffusion.
